Valentine's 2008

So, lately it is impossible not to notice, that Valentine’s day is just a few days from now. Almost every corner of this city is full of heart-shaped-I-love-you shiny red balloons. Every freaking card sold in literally every store is red, glittery and full with ridiculous cheesy lines.

I won’t deny that personally I have spent truly remarkable moments on Valentine’s day. I have enjoyed the flowers, candies, cards, balloons and notes, that have been given to me in the past, and of course I have enjoyed giving them too.

However, one can’t help but think that most of all the gifts that have been, and will be given then, are nothing but the result of our almost pathological exhibitionism, expressed delightfully by our need as a society to show the world that we love and that we are loved. But, when did all this shit become so utterly necessary?

Though I hate blaming in general (I consider it extremely immature) I will shamelessly accuse the relentless western influence which teaches us to believe that there is one an only one day to celebrate the love for our mothers, fathers, friends, and significant others.

Tons of romantic comedies, tv shows and commercials, somehow end up teaching us an unrealistic, standarized characterization of love, which unavoidably involves eternal perfect love, red roses, chocolate (which btw is no aphrodisiac), romantic expensive dinners, silky sheets and all that crap we all know about.

But then, love is just love, as terribly ambiguous, confusing, enjoyable, thrilling as it is and I strongly believe (don't you?) that we are quite capable to just express it our own unique way. We don’t need no guideliness to live it and certainly not to feel it.

Then again, do we really need to dress in pink and red, get an over-dose of sugar from heart-shaped candies, spend a ridiculous amount of time in the traffic, pay for overpriced balloons, flowers and cards that aren’t even original, because everyone in the city (maybe even in the world (thanks mother globalization)) will be receiving a very similar if not the exact same box of candies, card, balloon, and even the same plagiarized cheesy lines.

With this, I don’t mean to become one of the countless pseudo-love-grinches that wander around spreading bitter crap about love, and although I do strongly pronounce myself against this outrageous consumerism that necessarily overcomes, and against making Mr. Slim even richer than he already is, this sort of critique is not the main purpose of the text.

The issue here is, celebrating desperately love a day a year isn't any better than being around our significant other the rest of the year, doing all the not so reddish stuff like having dinner at random restaurants, watching a random movie on a comfy couch, having a drink, exploring a city, or a country, reading the same book, engaging in endless conversations, sharing our everyday activities, watching lame tv, and all that small little details which we all enjoy so much.

So my advice for Thursday; Keep it simple!!
